Virtual Worlds in Construction and Property Management
Architects have used 3-D models of buildings for years—long before virtual worlds took hold. When virtual worlds such as Second Life started to arrive, early adopters enthusiastically created all manner of virtual buildings. Starwood Hotels then pioneered testing real building designs in Second Life (an approach now emulated by other organizations, as this Viewpoints describes). But how far can virtual worlds go in helping create and maintain real-world buildings? On 14 May 2008, the UK's Serious Games Institute (SGI) held one of its regular "Second Wednesday" meetings on these issues (the SGI's Second Wednesday events are at the organization's Coventry premises and simultaneously in Second Life). This Viewpoints summarizes key insights from the meeting and discusses the potential of the construction and property-management market for virtual worlds.
