REN nyhetsbrev nr. 13, 2005

10. september 2005
Innhold:
1:  Årets studietur
2:  Project Based Learning Laboratory at Stanford University

Vinkhuyzen, E.; Szymanski, M. H.; Moore, R. J.; Raymond, G. T.; Whalen, J.; Whalen, M. Would you like to do it yourself? Service requests and their non-granting responses. To appear in Applying Conversation Analysis. 2004.

2:  Project Based Learning Laboratory at Stanford University

Litt mer om PBL Lab:  PBL Lab is the home of an integrated research and curriculum development effort launched in 1993 in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University.  The PBL Lab's Goal is to be world leaders in Global Teamwork together with our partners.
Our Mission is to engage graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, and industry practitioners in multi-disciplinary, collaborative, geographically distributed PBL activities. PBL is a process of teaching and learning that focuses on problem based, project centered activities that produce a product for a client. PBL will be based on re-engineering processes that bring people from multiple disciplines together.
Our Objectives are to develop, implement, test, deploy, and assess radically new and innovative:
- collaboration technologies
- learning technologies
- knowledge capture, sharing and re-use technologies
- workspaces
- learning and work processes that support collaborative, cross-disciplinary, geographically distributed teamwork and learning.

Training to Learning – klippet fra siste utgave av T&D magazine
By Martyn Sloman and Lois Webster

Informal learning has become more important and the role of the workplace learning and performance profession must change accordingly. Transatlantic discussions and exchanges of research information have brought about the following conclusion: a shift is taking place from training, which is a top-down intervention initiated by the organization, to learning, which is an ongoing process which lies in the domain of the individual.

In a collection of case studies, the authors explore the concept that only learners can learn and the way in which they learn is changing. Partly because of the nature of today’s organizations and partly because of individual preferences, informal learning has become more important and the role of the workplace learning and performance profession must change accordingly.

Given this background, it is beyond dispute that the role of the trainer (to use the traditional term) is changing. New job titles have emerged, often involving the word learning. Continuing research has led the authors to describe the new role as one of supporting, accelerating and directing learning using the intervention that is appropriate to the need, the learner and the context.

The workplace learning and performance professional will proceed through a series of interventions, which, because of their relevance, will command support in the organization. There is no single model of universal “best practice” but a lot of examples of good practice.

SABA Software

Du finner rapporten her: http://www.saba.com/gartner/saba_in_gartner_leader_quad.pdf

The August 2005 issue of LoD Viewpoints

SumTotal and Pathlore: The LMS Consolidation Story Continues

The July 2005 Viewpoints looked at Saba's survival in the learning-management-system (LMS) marketplace after completing the acquisition of THINQ and making progress on a variety of other fronts. Shortly after the publication of that Viewpoints, SumTotal announced an agreement to acquire Pathlore--and the consolidation and disruption in the LMS market continued. This Viewpoint reviews the SumTotal deal, examines recent LMS user research, and provides analysis relevant to all learning-industry players working with LMS.
